FIFA: To develop Guidelines to support Member Associations in creating a safer environment for players in football academies

In early 2023, FIFA appointed EN GARDE to lead the development of Safeguarding and Player Care Guidelines for Football Academies worldwide. This global initiative aims to support FIFA Member Associations in creating safer, more nurturing environments for young players in football academies, both residential and non-residential.

To inform the development of the guidelines, EN GARDE conducted a multi-layered process that included:

  • A comprehensive desk and literature review of existing research, policies, and best practices
  • Safeguarding risk assessments in academies across diverse contexts, including France, Malawi, Mauritania, Senegal, Costa Rica, and Honduras
  • Extensive stakeholder consultations within and beyond FIFA – including federation leaders, academy directors, safeguarding officers, players, and external experts in child protection, education, and psychosocial support

The result is a set of practical, actionable guidelines designed to help Member Associations assess risks, implement safeguards, and strengthen player care systems. These guidelines are set to be officially launched in early 2025, representing a major step forward in FIFA’s commitment to safeguarding and player wellbeing. Link will be added here soon.
